Met Office issues verdict on Bank Holiday weekend weather after deluge of rain

The Met Office has delivered its verdict on the hopes of brighter weather this bank holiday weekend.

It comes after a wave of heavy rain has battered many parts of the UK this week, breaking the period of moderate and sunny conditions we've all been experiencing for the middle part of May. According to forecasters, the heavy rain over the past few days is starting to subside.

While this means some parts of England and Wales will see dryer weather this weekend, other parts of the UK will still experience some showers. On Friday showers will most likely be seen in Scotland and Northern Ireland while more sunnier conditions will likely be seen in the south of England.

Saturday will be slightly drier though, with the Met Office reporting lows of 20C in parts of the southeast while the rest of the UK will see some periods of sunshine throughout the day. However, the weekend will continue to be a mixed bag for many with Sunday seeing another change in weather patterns, the Met Office said.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway explained: “The Bank Holiday weekend will see some sunny spells and it will feel quite pleasant in the sunshine for many on Saturday in particular. Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday will likely see a return to sunshine and showers. Low pressure to the west is likely to push fronts into the UK on Sunday, these tending to break up and turn more showery in nature as they do so.

"We are likely to see some heavy, possibly thundery showers on both days, but there should still be some dry spells in between, and in any sunshine it will feel pleasantly warm.”
