Met Office issues more warnings as Storm Herminia set to batter UK with 75mph winds

After Eowyn brought the 'strongest winds in 10 years' to the UK, another named storm is on the way. Storm Herminia, named by the Spanish meteorological office, will bring more gusty gales and heavy rain.

The UK's Met Office has issued three yellow weather warnings for wind today (January 26), plus one for heavy rain. Herminia is set to move east throughout the day, hitting the South West first, where the fiercest winds are expected.

The first wind warning covers parts of Cornwall and south Devon from 6am to 11am today. Here, winds of between 55mph and 65mph are expected in most areas, while gusts of up to 75mph are possible in coastal and hilly areas.

A much larger area of the UK is covered by the second warning, from 8am to 5pm today, where gust speeds of 50mph to 60mph are expected - plus gusts of up to 70mph on the coast. The warning covers the South West, Wales, much of the Midlands and the North West coastline - including parts of Merseyside and Lancashire.

The warning avoids Greater Manchester, with the region set to avoid the worst of the weather. However, there are still gusty winds expected to hit the city, between 41mph and 47mph throughout the afternoon.

Manchester is also forecast for heavy rain at 1pm, with light rain through the rest of the afternoon, before further periods of rain overnight. The city is forecast for highs of 7C and lows of 4C by the Met Office.

A third warning for wind covers Northern Ireland from 10am to 7pm, with gusts of up to 60mph expected. In areas with weather warnings, the Met Office says strong winds could cause travel disruption, large waves and flying debris.
