Messi, Aguero, Henry: Yaya Toure's 2018 dream XI was utterly bonkers

Yaya Toure is perhaps, remarkably so, one of the most underrated footballers in Premier League history.

That’s not to see that people thought Yaya was bad, because they don’t, but he’s rarely in the conversation when discussing the best in the league’s history, when he probably should be included.

As well as leaving fans with their jaws on the floor from his performances on the pitch, Yaya raised eyebrows with his appearance on Monday Night Football in December 2018.

On the show, Yaya was tasked with picking an ultimate XI comprised of the players he had the pleasure of playing alongside, and it was utterly bonkers.

The team, which you can see below, lined up in the 3-1-4-2 formation, and was about as attacking as you can get.

There’s no denying that the team has immense quality, boasting the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Samuel Eto’o, but Toure was criticised for making the team slightly too top-heavy.

Toure only included three defenders, Vincent Kompany, Rafael Marquez and Carlos Puyol, with Andres Iniesta, quite an attacking player in his own right, being the only midfielder selected.

Yaya did explain his attacking formation, and to be fair to him, he made a compelling case, arguing that he would try not to let the opposition too far up the pitch.

“For me, if I was manager, I would go with this formation. Why? Because for me, it’s about keeping the opponent as far away from my goal and have the guys who are focused and control the game.”
