Mentally-ill young man killed his 'gentle, loving' dad and tried to murder his mum

The sister of a 23-year-old man who stabbed their dad to death and tried to kill their mum says her family are beyond heartbroken by the tragedy.

Garvey Gayle had suffered with severe mental health problems for years and had been admitted into a secure unit just months before he attacked his father Michael, 54, and mum Amanda Brookes, 50, while at home.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Gayle had been staying at the YMCA following his discharge but wanted to go back and live with his mum in St Mellons. Ms Brookes said she had concerns about her son coming to stay and had taken the precaution of putting three knifes from the kitchen in the fridge.

A statement by Michael Gayle’s daughter and Garvey Gayle’s sister Marysia Gayle was read aloud to the court, which detailed her family's shock and indescribable pain.

She said: "The last two years were like watching a film, it
