Medical scheduled as Swansea City player closes in on Premier League transfer move

West Ham have won the race to sign Flynn Downes from Swansea City, with the midfielder set for a medical tomorrow.

The 23-year-old has been a man in-demand all summer, with key figures at the Welsh club knowing it was going to be hard to keep Downes beyond the transfer window.

And, that’s proven to be the case, with Crystal Palace initially leading the chase to sign the defensive midfielder in a deal that was worth an initial £9m but rising.

However, in a late twist, the Hammers made a move for the player and it appears the former Ipswich Town man is heading to the London Stadium, with Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth revealing that the switch is now at an advanced stage.

“Downes to have West Ham medical in next 24 hours.”

That will be a big boost to David Moyes, who is keen to strengthen his squad ahead of another European campaign, whilst it’s the dream transfer for Downes as he grew up supporting the Hammers having been brought up in Brentwood.

The verdict

This is a great move for Downes as he is making the step up to a top Premier League side, one that plays in Europe and one that he supports.

So, when West Ham firmed up their interest it was always going to be difficult for him to turn them down – and that’s proven to be the case.

It’s a blow for Palace, but these things happen and Swansea will be pleased that this move has happened quickly as it will give Martin the chance to reinvest in the squad.
