Meath gaining momentum after second straight victory

Meath made it two wins from two in this year's Tailteann Cup with a convincing 3-17 to 1-14 win over Waterford at Fraher Field on Saturday afternoon.

After beating Tipperary by double scores last weekend, Colm O'Rourke's side continued their resurgence of sorts by leaving the Déise County with nine points to spare on their way back to the Royal County.

After a relatively low-scoring first half, Meath led by 0-09 to 1-04. But after the tea break, both teams started to find their range.

The visitors made a couple of changes at half-time; James McEntee and Cillian O'Sullivan replaced Cathal Hickey and Keith Curtis and took up residence in either wng-forward positions. The changes seemed to do the trick and the goals flowed for the Royals in that second period.

Matthew Costello had been keeping the scoreboard ticking over from frees, but he grabbed a crucial goal in the 41st minute to stretch Meath five points clear, 1-10 to 1-05. Jason Curry had got a fine goal for the home side in the first half to keep them well in touch.

But Meath were beginnign to put the foot down and when Jordan Morris finished a penalty with style in the 56th minute, the suddenly led by eight points - 2-12 to 1-07.

Aaron Lynch's 61st-minute free gave him a total 0-06 on the day and when his replacement, Donal Lenihan, capitalised on a defensive error to nab his side's third goal, the game was effectively over.

For Meath, it's two wins from two in Group 2. For the hosts, it's two straight losses after last week's reversal in Down.
