Mean Girls fans confused as they point out same issue with new film trailer

Mean Girls fans have been left asking the same question after the first trailer for a new musical film dropped.

The new movie, slated for release in January 2024, is inspired by the 2004 original film as well as the award-winning 2017 Broadway musical. It stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, Reneé Rapp as Regina George, Moana's Auli’i Cravalho as Janice and Jaquel Spivey as Damian.

Avantika Vandanapu plays Karen while Bebe Wood is Gretchen and The Summer I Turned Pretty's Christopher Briney plays heart-throb Aaron Samuels. OG cast member Tina Fey reclaims her role as Ms Norbury, while Emily in Paris star Ashley Park joins the cast as a French teacher.

Just like the original film, the new Mean Girls musical movie will follow teenager Cady who relocates to North Shore High School. Trying hard to work out the politics of the new school, she befriends Janis and Damon and, with their help, attempts to infiltrate and bring down The Plastics, led by Regina.

It is also set to feature iconic hits from the Broadway musical - although, from the first trailer, you would never have known it. The two-minute teaser features no sign of any musical number and is instead soundtracked by Olivia Rodrigo's hit Get Him Back!

The trailer starts out with the warning: “This is not your mother's Mean Girls" before giving a first look at Rapp as Regina George. Viewers also see Tina Fey as the new Ms Norbury, while actor and TikTok star Chris Olsen also makes a surprise appearance.
