McNulty linked with Laois return as Tipp line up Keane

A meeting of the Laois GAA executive will be held tonight with the possibility a new county senior football manager will be sent forward for ratification.

Laois have been in the process of replacing former manager Billy Sheehan since July.

Sheehan was appointed O'Moore County boss at the end of 2021 and stepped down this season after his side’s Tailteann Cup semi-final defeat to Down.

A number of established coaches and managers have been linked with the position in recent weeks but lately the name of former Laois boss Justin McNulty has been mentioned locally as a candidate to replace Sheehan.

McNulty previously took charge of the county senior side in 2010 and stepped down after three years. The 2002 Armagh All-Ireland winner guided Laois to promotion to Division 1 of the National League in 2011 with his side reaching the All-Ireland quarter-finals in 2012.

Laois played 15 Championship matches under his tenure and won nine, with their best performance being their quarter-final appearance in 2012.

Meanwhile, former Kerry minor and senior boss Peter Keane has emerged as a candidate for the vacant Tipperary senior football manager position.

After David Power stepped down over three months ago, the Premier County has been in the process of appointing a replacement.

Keane managed his native county senior team from 2019 to 2021 and brought them to the All-Ireland final in his first year in charge, losing to Dublin after a replay.

Keane had incredible success with the Kerry minors in the years before taking the top job, guiding them to three All-Ireland titles at that level.
