The Simola Hillclimb returns in 2022 the first weekend of May.

Class A is the most competitor-filled this year, including defending champion, Jean-Pierre van der Walt.

Van der Walt set a winning time of 45.858 seconds in 2021.

The 2022 Simola Hillclimb is almost here, and spectators of the event can be assured of plenty of action from an array of cars. As always, the action kicks off on Friday (6 May) with Classic Car Friday, followed by the King of the Hill that will run throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Seasoned competitors and new entries will take on the 1.9km Simola Hill as they compete in what has indeed become one of the premier events on the South African motorsport calendar.

Participants will compete in three categories: Road-going Saloon Cars and Supercars, the Modified Saloon Cars, and specialised Single Seaters and Sports Prototypes.

Class A winner returns

Class A is filled with the most competitors, and the cars drivers take on the hill are street-legal machines that you'd find on showroom floors. According to the regulations, "only standard road tyres are permitted that match the original manufacturer's specification, and the limited changes allowed are restricted to safety-critical features such as a racing seat with harness, and a roll cage if applicable."

Cars partaking in this category include a variety of cars, all ranging from V8 sedans to high-performance supercars. There are even electric vehicles competing for class honours.
