McLaren will decide on Formula E in ‘next few months’

In talks with Mercedes regarding their Formula E team, McLaren CEO Zak Brown says a decision will be made in the “next few months”.

McLaren have branched out in recent years, the company entering the IndyCar championship where they teamed up with Sam Schmidt Motorsport to create Arrow McLaren SP.

Last year they also announced they’re joining the Extreme E series in 2022, signing Emma Gilmour and Tanner Foust as the two drivers.

And it appears as if McLaren’s expansion isn’t stopping there.

According to The Race, Brown is in talks with Mercedes about forming a “potential independent ‘super team’” that would enable the Mercedes name to remain on the grid, albeit in a different capacity to the current guise as a works team.

Mercedes announced last year that it will exit Formula E at the end of the 2022 season, Mercedes EQ team principal Ian James scrambling to find a buyer.

There is currently no clarity on how a collaboration between McLaren and Mercedes would work, although the reports states that the cars would probably be powered by a Nissan customer powertrain for the Gen3 era.

McLaren’s other option is to go it alone, creating a brand new team.

Brown says he’ll make a decision on that, and the WEC, in the coming months.

“We’ve been reviewing the World Endurance Championship series which we like and we’ve also been reviewing Formula E,” he told Gulf Business.

“Those continue to be under review and I think we’ll make some decisions on those in the next few months.”

However, even if McLaren do branch out further than they have already done, Brown insists Formula 1 is the company’s main focus.
