McLaren will analyse vast performance gap between Ricciardo, Norris

McLaren boss Andreas Seidl admits they need to analyse why Daniel Ricciardo cannot match teammate Lando Norris's performance in races, including last time out at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ricciardo's 18 months at McLaren have not been great, with his only big moment coming with victory in last year's Italian GP at Imola.

Last weekend at Hungaroring, Ricciardo only managed to finish in 15th position despite qualifying ninth, while teammate Norris claimed seventh after starting from fourth on the grid.

What has been hard to fathom is that both drivers had been on the same strategy, so the difference in placing should not have been quite so extreme in Hungary.

It must be understood

When asked about the difference between the two McLaren drivers, Seidl said: "[We scored] important points, obviously, for our battle in the constructors' championship battle with Alpine.

"But, of course, we need to understand why on Daniel's side, with exactly the same strategy, we were falling off so much with the hard tyres in the final stint, which put Daniel out of the points. That's what we need to analyse together with Daniel."

Having been off the pace at the start of the season, McLaren introduced upgrades which helped a lot in their tussle with Alpine for fourth place behind current leaders Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes.
