McIlroy grabs share of early clubhouse lead at the BMW

Rory McIlroy has opened with a five-under-par 65 to take the early clubhouse lead on the delayed first day at the BMW Championship.

The Holywood man is vying for a record fourth FedEx Cup title and got himself off to the best possible start here with a typically relentless round of ball-striking at Olympia Fields Country Club.

Rain had held up the start of the day's play, but once the players got the all clear, McIlroy got right down to business. He would be made wait until the seventh hole for his first birdie, but he would pick up four more after that in a blemish-free 18 holes.

McIlroy is the defening FedEx Cup champion having also taken the title in 2016 and 2019.

Thisyear's Open Champion, Brian Harman, matched McIlroy's 65 to also sit on minus-five, one shot clear of Matt Fitzpatrick and Sahith Theegala.
