McGing fails to progress in Diving World Championships

Ireland's Ciara McGing has failed to progress through the preliminary round of the Diving World Championships in Japan this morning.

The 22-year-old completed the preliminaries of the 10-metre platform on a score of 244.90 which was good enough for 28th place.

The highest score came for her opening dive, an inward two and a half somersaults with 56 points.

McGing will have her second and final opportunity for qualification for the Paris Olympics in February 2024.

That comes at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar.

She said: "I’m obviously disappointed with my dives this morning, it was a shame as I have been training and feeling good. I’m ready to take a break before I head back to the States (Ohio State University).

"I’m determined to put myself in a strong position for Doha. Thank you for all the support from home."

Eighteen divers progressed to the semi-final. The top 12 are now confirmed for Wednesday’s final with all securing places for Paris 2024.

Jake Passmore returns to action in the preliminaries of the three metre springboard.

There will be 68 divers in the competition with the top 18 progressing to the semi-final. Again the top 12 will secure places for the Olympics.
