MCG stand to be renamed for Shane Warne as Victoria offers state funeral to ‘shocked’ family

Shane Warne will have a stand named after him at the MCG, while his family has been offered a state funeral, following the cricket legend’s shock death at age 52.

Warne died of a suspected heart attack late on Friday in a luxury villa on the Thailand holiday island of Koh Samui.

The father-of-three’s management confirmed he was found unresponsive by friends and was unable to be revived.

“When we arrived at the location, we saw the victim lying on the lower floor,” ambulance worker Kittichai Huadmueang said.

Thai police revealed Warne’s body had been taken for an autopsy, but an ambulance worker on the scene said there were no signs of a suspicious death.

“From what we could observe, there was no wound, no sign of struggle,” Mr Huadmueang said.

Warne had posted a good night message from his holiday villa hours before news of his death emerged.

The news came less than 24 hours after the death of fellow Australia cricket great Rod Marsh, who Warne himself had only just publicly paid tribute to.

Australia’s men’s Test team had just finished play on day one in Pakistan when the news broke, while the national women’s team woke to the news as they begin their World Cup in New Zealand.

“Hard to fathom,” a clearly emotional Pat Cummins said.
