Maxwel Cornet ready to leave Burnley as report reveals details of bargain exit clause in Clarets deal
Burnley star Maxwel Cornet could make way for £17.5million after just one season with the club thanks to a relegation clause in his deal.
Cornet burst onto the scene following his £13.5million move from Lyon in the summer. In his first five games, the Ivorian scored four goals, including a brace against Southampton.
Immediately, it looked as if Burnley had uncovered a gem. He had been performing consistently for years in France, and took to the Premier League with ease.
Cornet was clearly one of Burnley’s most crucial assets over the course of the season. He ended as their top goalscorer, with nine goals – the highest league tally of his career.
His final goal of the season came on the last day, when the Clarets needed to better Leeds United’s result to stay up.
After Burnley went 2-0 down to Newcastle United, Cornet tried his best to claw them back into it, but his strike was merely a consolation, and a Leeds win meant Mike Jackson’s side were relegated.
That relegation could mean for another move for Cornet, though. A report from The Athletic details a clause in his contract, which means he can now leave for £17.5million, due to the relegation.
