Maxwel Cornet has shown on and off the pitch why he'll be a tough act to follow should he leave
As every day passes, a small glimmer of hope rises among Burnley fans that Maxwel Cornet will be a Claret come opening night and maybe even beyond the transfer window.
It remains extremely likely that the 25-year-old will move on this summer, with a £17.5million relegation release clause active in his contract, and Everton are believed to be keen on the Ivory Coast international while Fulham, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have also been linked.
The Clarets are powerless to prevent Cornet leaving should someone stump up the fee and may well entertain structured alternatives but Burnley are not interested in offloading a player on the cheap given they only signed a year ago and he is under a long-term contract. The Clarets are not standing in the way of players who have Premier League options provided the offer is right, as evidenced by the departures of Nick Pope and Nathan Collins.
A Cornet exit is not imminent and the player himself is in Portugal with the squad preparing for the new season and a behind closed doors friendly with Newcastle United on Saturday. And judging by the club snippets from the training camp, the forward is not fazed by any transfer talk.
Burnley released a 90 second video on Wednesday of Cornet behind the camera, filming his team-mates in the gym, footage that further enhanced his cult status among supporters. Replacing him on the pitch would be tough, replacing him off the pitch is also a tough act to follow.
A lot is made of the camaraderie at Burnley and the dressing room spirit has been built over time, helped by having a familiar core and limited arrivals meaning those in the Turf trenches are a tight knit group. Cornet's arrival last summer, a player who spoke very little
