Max Verstappen rules out triple crown attempt due to Indy 500 risk

Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has said that he has no desire to try and win motorsport’s triple crown with the threat that the Indy 500 poses the reason behind it.

The Dutch driver is one of the best drivers in the world at the moment and also has one leg of the triple crown under his belt, with him winning the Monaco Grand Prix back in 2021.

He needs victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Indy 500 to complete the set, then, but he’s revealed that he’s not that interested in trying to do so.

Speaking after finishing 3rd at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, and as the Indy 500 got underway – a race that was won by former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson – Verstappen revealed the danger that the high-speed chase at Indianapolis poses does not really make it something he wants to overly get involved with:

“I never had the desire to get the triple crown.

“At least, not the IndyCar race. I do appreciate what they do. It’s insane, those drivers… I have a lot of respect for what they do, but for me now that I’ve been in F1 for so long, I don’t need to risk my life or get an injury to my legs or anything. It’s not worth it anymore.”

It’s interesting to hear Max speak like this as he is only 24-years-old but he’s been at the top level of motorsport longer than most at his age.

It’s clear he’s looking at the bigger picture and does not want to risk what he can do in F1 by making an Indy 500 cameo, though he did later admit the Le Mans 24 Hours might be something of interest as he enjoys endurance races.
