Max Verstappen excited to take on 'insane' Monte-Carlo this weekend

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has said he cannot wait to take on the ‘insane’ nature of the Monte-Carlo circuit for the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend.

The Dutchman heads into round seven of the world championship atop the Drivers’ standings after winning last time out in Spain, with Charles Leclerc retiring from the lead with a power unit problem.

It’s proving an unpredictable title race between them, then, whilst Red Bull’s other driver Sergio Perez isn’t too far off in the points standings and will believe he can still earn victories and challenge at the sharp end.

We head to Monaco this weekend for the latest Grand Prix of the year, then, and Verstappen is clearly excited about taking on the unique challenge that is the Monte-Carlo circuit, given its narrow nature.

“Monaco is always a hectic but special weekend,” said Max.

“Qualifying is critical, the track is very old school and narrow, your heart rate goes so high, it’s insane!

“We have to constantly be on the edge, it’s a pretty crazy track with Formula One cars. My Monaco race history was not so good but I finally won there last year and there was a massive relief once I crossed the line, I was very happy to win that race.

“Checo and I are working really well as a Team and it is of course great that we are leading the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships but there is still a very long way to go and a lot can change, as we’ve seen so far this season.”

The race might attract some criticism from fans for being a little processional but you only have to read the quotes from the drivers ahead of this weekend to see just how much they love this place, and the challenge it throws up.
