Max Verstappen backed in Lewis Hamilton title debate - 'I don't think you can say that'

Max Verstappen has been backed by Karun Chandhok over his 2021 Formula One world title win, amid some suggestions that Michael Masi's sacking as FIA race director should see the crown handed over to Lewis Hamilton. The Dutchman's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix win prompted fierce debate, which reignited this week after FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem committed to a series of changes.

Verstappen passed Hamilton on the final lap at Yas Marina to decide the title in dramatic circumstances.

The victory was peppered with controversy, as Masi effectively wiped out the Brit's lead behind a late safety car by allowing the lapped drivers between the pair to pass through, a rule that, inexplicably, did not apply to those behind Verstappen.

On fresh tyres, the Red Bull man overtook Hamilton to secure his first Drivers' Championship and prevent his arch-rival from winning number eight.

Mercedes were believed to be lining up an appeal after the race, before backtracking on their intention to do so as Hamilton withdrew from the public eye.

It took almost two months for the 37-year-old to re-emerge publicly, although he admitted that he never considered retirement during Mercedes' W13 launch on Friday.

Given the backdrop behind Verstappen's maiden world title win, the FIA's decision to replace Masi as race director and review unlapping safety car procedures has cast doubt on its legitimacy.

Still, analyst and former F1 driver Chandhok feels that calls for the accolade to change hands are wide of the mark.

"I don't believe the result should be overturned," he told Sky Sports.
