Mauricio Pochettino to 'help' Dele Alli in bid to aid career revival

New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says he is planning to contact Dele Alli in a bid to help turn the former Tottenham midfielder’s fortunes around. Alli, 27, thrived under Pochettino at Spurs, earning himself a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in football as well as a call-up to the England squad. Ad However, since the Argentine’s departure from the north London club in 2019, Alli’s career has taken a turn for the worse, and Pochettino is keen to check in with his former talismanic midfielder, insisting “he has the mentality” to succeed.

He is still young.

And for sure he has the mentality. “It’s a long time since I spoke to him but I want to contact him again and see what is going on.” Alli joined Spurs in 2015 and quickly made a name for himself as a dynamic and creative midfielder. In three seasons from 2015 through to 2018, the Englishman averaged 22 goal contributions and was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017.

However, his game time and goal contributions started to decrease when Pochettino left and declined significantly under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte. A move to Everton in January 2022 was touted as the fresh start the Englishman needed to revive his stalling career under Frank Lampard, but it only served to deepen his woes.
