Mattia Binotto reflects on Ferrari errors at Monaco

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto has said that he fully understands Charles Leclerc’s frustrations after seeing his home race victory hopes dashed during the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Scuderia driver was leading the field having started from pole position but saw his hopes of taking P1 on home turf ruined by some awry strategy calls from his team.

Indeed, after pit stops, Leclerc found himself down in fourth place and, with Monaco the most difficult track of all to overtake on, that proved a death sentence for his victory hopes on Sunday.

It was clear that Leclerc was hugely frustrated over team radio, too, and Binotto has reflected on the day with him saying he understands just how his driver feels:

“I fully understand the disappointment for Charles, he was first and finishing fourth means that something was wrong in the decision we made.

“So clearly we need to review it and I think we underestimated the speed of the intermediate at that stage and so we could have called a lap earlier for Charles or later on, maybe we should have left him outside on the extreme wet then going on the dry.

“These are mistakes that may happen but more importantly it is a lesson to learn to try and understand why they happened and I am sure that is a process we will do it.”

Leclerc is now 9 points off of Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ standings, with Max finishing a spot in front in Monaco as he took P3.
