Matthjis De Ligt joined Bayern in July & he's already speaking fluent German

Matthjis De Ligt played his part as Bayern Munich smashed Viktoria Koln in their DFB-Pokal tie on Wednesday evening.

The Dutchman was in the starting lineup for the clash at RheinEnergieSTADION.

He played the full 90 minutes as Bayern prevailed 5-0. Ryan Gravenberch, Mathys Tel, Sadio Mane, Jamal Musiala and Leon Goretzka were all on the scoresheet for the Bundesliga giants.

There was a funny moment after the game involving De Ligt.

The 23-year-old only signed for Bayern in July, joining in a €77 million move from Juventus.

Upon arriving, De Ligt conceded that he was not fluent in German but vowed to learn the language as soon as possible.

He said, per Twitter user @iMiaSanMia, a Bayern news account: “At the start, I will give the most important commands in English. But German is hugely important and there are many similar words in German and Dutch. I will do my best and I want to learn the language quickly.”

His interview after the Viktoria Koln game shows he has been true to his word. He even spoke in fluent German when he was not supposed to.

A reporter asked De Ligt: “Congratulations on passing to the next round. What are your thoughts on the match?”

Despite being asked the question in English, De Ligt proceeded to answer the question in German.

The reporter then replied: “Ok so I’m speaking English, not German. Can we speak in English?”

To which De Ligt laughed, before apologising and giving the rest of the interview in English. View the moment below…
