Matthijs de Ligt makes Bayern Munich admission after Man City Champions League defeat

Matthijs de Ligt said Bayern Munich were left ruing missed chances as his side fell to a 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat at Manchester City on Tuesday.

City produced one of their finest European displays at the Etihad, with goals from Rodri, Bernardo Siva and Erling Haaland handing Pep Guardiola's side a three-goal advantage going into next week's second leg. The Blues could have had more in a second-half blitz, were it not for some fine saves by visiting keeper Yann Sommer.

Rodri opened the scoring on 27 minutes, curling a wonderful long range effort into the top corner. The midfielder's goal came when Bayern were in the ascendancy. Indeed the German side could have taken the lead themselves moments earlier when Jamal Musiala's goalbound shot from inside the box was brilliant blocked by Ruben Dias.

The first leg turned on that two-minute spell, with City gaining momentum and Bayern wobbling. Guardiola's side were dominant from then on but De Ligt felt the visitors had only themselves to blame.

“It was 3-0, but they had chances to make it four or five," De Ligt told Prime Video. "I think we gave the game away. City had a big chance in the first half, but we had one too through Musiala. It’s a shame to give the game away like that. We had our chances, not as many as Manchester City, they played a lot better. Of course it sucks to give it away like that.”
