Matt Targett warns Burnley that Newcastle United are in no mood for favours on Survival Sunday

Matt Targett has insisted Newcastle United are determined to finish the season with a big high - by clinching a top 10 finish at Burnley.

The Clarets, of course, know they may need a victory to stay in the Premier League but Targett, on loan from Aston Villa, is eager to sign off on winning note. Having been a big part of the 2022 revival at St James' Park many fans would love to see Targett stay.

But a decision on his future is awaited, for now Targett wants three points at Turf Moor, he told Chronicle Live: "We still want to finish as high as possible. We know Burnley are fighting for their lives so it's going to be a completely different game to Arsenal.

"We've finished the season strong at St James's but we want to go into the last game and win that too. No matter what, we'll go into the game trying to win.

"That's the way the manager is and that's what the players want too. We won't be thinking the season is done, no way, there are still three more points up for grabs and hopefully that helps the club finish even higher."

When asked if there had been any celebrations since the club's top-flight status was secure, Targett added: "No, we were literally just keeping focused on the game. We know as professionals it is one game at a time and we kind of knew a long time ago after we went on that really good run that we were pretty much safe but we are just focusing on finishing as high as possible now."

Burnley must better Leeds' result at Brentford to stay up. Newcastle are bidding for a place in the top 10.
