Mats Wilander 'wouldn’t be surprised if Novak Djokovic wins nine or 10' Wimbledon titles and breaks Roger Federer record

Mats Wilander believes Novak Djokovic will break Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles and could end up on nine or 10. Djokovic has won the last four editions of Wimbledon and this year is bidding to lift the trophy for an eighth time to equal Federer’s men’s record and move one behind nine-time champion Martina Navratilova. 2 Djokovic started his 2023 campaign with a straight-sets win over Pedro Cachin on Monday. “If it’s not this year then it’s next year, and if it’s not next year then it’s the year after. I think Novak has another four or five years left in him here as one of the favourites at Wimbledon.” Since the start of 2021, Djokovic has only lost two matches at Grand Slams – in the 2021 US Open final and in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open. With two majors this year taking him to 23 in total he has pulled one ahead of Rafael Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam standings.

If he wins a 24th at Wimbledon he would equal Margaret Court’s record – and could become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the Calendar Slam. While Wilander expects Djokovic to break Federer’s record of Wimbledon titles, he doesn’t think he will surpass Jimmy Connors’ record of titles won. Connors won 109 singles titles and Djokovic is currently on 94, nine behind Federer.
