Matheus Nunes transfer clause revealed as Matt Doherty addresses Wolves links

Matt Doherty insists he never came close to returning to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January and didn’t ask to leave Tottenham Hotspur.

The 30-year-old joined Spurs in a £14million deal in September 2020 after a decade at Molineux. Doherty initially struggled for game time under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo, but he has managed to force his way into Antonio Conte’s plans.

Doherty has started six games in a row under Conte and he’s registered two goals and four assists from 14 Premier League appearances this season. The Irishman has enjoyed a spectacular turnaround after being among the players Spurs were willing to sell in January.

Doherty has now set the record straight by revealing he never intended to leave Spurs, now fourth in the Premier League, during the January transfer window. “I didn’t come close (to leaving), I never had a conversation, nothing was ever said to me,” Doherty told PA.

“From my point of view I was led to believe that I wasn’t going anywhere. I don’t know if that’s the case, that is what my point of view was. You have thoughts at times that it wasn’t working out, I just decided that I wanted to train hard and I wanted to play here.

“Why would I want to go anywhere apart from Tottenham? I thought if I keep training hard and I keep doing what the manager wants the opportunity would come and it would be up to me to grasp the opportunity and at the moment I seem to be doing that well.”
