"Massive selling point" - Journalist drops big AVFC claim as Gerrard eyes game-changing signing

Aston Villa could use Philippe Coutinho as ‘a massive selling point’ for prospective new strikers in the summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Villans are believed to be in the market for a new forward ahead of next season as manager Steven Gerrard looks to bolster his attacking options.

Coutinho returned to the Premier League during the January transfer window, completing a six-month loan deal from Barcelona that includes the option to buy for £33 million.

And the attacking midfielder has seamlessly transitioned back into life in English football’s top-flight, registering four goals and three assists in 11 appearances to date.

But Gerrard has ambitions to further strengthen his first-team squad when the market reopens for business.

Jones has previously revealed to GiveMeSport that the 41-year-old tactician wants ‘Champions League level players’ at the club in order to continue their progression on the pitch.

Villa’s ambitious owners have spent vast sums of money on transfers since their return to the Premier League, with the likes of Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne all arriving.

But it seems as though Gerrard is unsatisfied with his options in the final third of the pitch at this moment in time and could target a new marksman in the coming months.

According to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans, Villa ‘will monitor’ Luis Suarez’s situation at Atletico Madrid closely ahead of a potential move as he approaches the end of his current contract.

And Jones believes the prospect of playing with Coutinho could help lure a top-level striker to Villa Park.
