Aston Villa: 437-goal star would be 'statement signing' at Villa Park

Aston Villa signing Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez would be a statement of intent, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Suarez previously spent three-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool between 2011 and 2014, and a return to the Premier League could be on the cards for the 132-cap international this summer.

Suarez’s contract at Atletico is set to expire at the end of June, meaning that he would be available on a free transfer at this point.

The 35-year-old played alongside Steven Gerrard for Liverpool, and the Aston Villa boss is reportedly keen on a reunion with his former teammate.

The Villans are believed to be interested in the striker, who has won five La Liga titles and the Champions League during his time in Spain.

O’Rourke has admitted that he has doubts about Villa’s chances of pulling off this deal. However, he has suggested it would be a major coup for the club if they could convince Suarez to move to Villa Park.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “I’d be surprised if this move is to happen. But, I think for Villa, they’re definitely an ambitious club going forward right now, and if they could get someone like Luis Suarez, it would be a real statement signing from the club.

“And it has been an issue for Villa this season, the lack of goals or lack of goals from their forwards, so if you brought someone like Luis Suarez to the club, it would bring a big improvement to their attacking options.”

Suarez has had a stunning career, netting 437 goals in 695 appearances at club level. With numbers like these, he deserves to be recognised as one of the finest players of his generation.
