"Massive" – Journalist drops Rangers claim ahead of RB Leipzig clash

Rangers and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst could bring the Europa League back to Ibrox this season, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Having beaten Braga after extra-time earlier this month, Van Bronckhorst’s side face a huge clash against Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in their first leg semi-final tie in Germany on Thursday.

Domestically, it’s been a disappointing season for the Glasgow giants, who could all-but be out of the title race if they lose to Celtic this weekend, with the gap currently six points with four games left.

But Rangers are just 90 minutes away from claiming their first domestic cup since 2011 after beating their Old Firm rivals to reach the Scottish Cup final recently, while they’re just three games away from European glory.

Van Bronckhorst’s side are enjoying a fine run in the Europa League, already knocking out Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, and Braga, in the knockout stages, and will be hoping to move one step closer to reaching next month’s showpiece in Seville over the next 10 days.

With Leipzig flying high in the Bundesliga, losing just twice in the league since Christmas, they are favourites for the tie.

But O’Rourke reckons that the red-hot atmosphere at Ibrox in the second leg could see them into a first European final since 2008.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s a massive opportunity for Rangers, I don’t think many people would have expected them to get to the semi finals of this competition.

“Obviously they’ve got a tough test against RB Leipzig, but I think Rangers have shown they can compete against the best and I think European nights at Ibrox have been really memorable for them.
