Mason Mount stats vs Moises Caicedo show what Manchester United are getting

Manchester United have come to an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Mason Mount in a deal worth up to £60m.

The playmaker had just 12 months left on his deal and so United were reluctant to pay his £65m asking price but have come to a compromise. United know their potential alternative interest in Moises Caicedo would have been more costly with Erik ten Hag handed a budget of just over £100m.

At 21, Caicedo is three years Mount’s junior and has longer left on his Brighton contract - four years with the option for an additional one. He would not have come cheap. Both Mount and Caicedo operate differently in midfield.

Mount is more attack-minded while Caicedo is a natural pivot in a deeper role. So when we compare stats between the two, it is not logical to contrast certain aspects such as tackles and final third play, for example - areas where one will clearly thrive more due to their roles.

However, we can look at averages in accordance to their output during their minutes on the pitch, which do vary. Mount played 24 times in the Premier League last season, 13 times fewer than Caicedo.

But Mount managed to produce more goals and assists (three and two) versus Caicedo (one and one). Interestingly, both players aim similar proportions of their shots on target - Mount directing 27.3% of his efforts between the sticks and Caicedo, 28.6%.

Caicedo has a better pass completion rate at 88.5% and that is not just due to his more withdrawn role. In all three thirds of the pitch, he is more successful with his passes than Mount.

There is another interesting metric recorded by the website fb.ref, which shows the total distance of passes each player
