Mason Mount has given Manchester United a Bruno Fernandes decision to make

At first glance, the impending arrival of Mason Mount at Old Trafford is not a signing that is likely to set Manchester United supporters' pulses racing.

The England international is on the cusp of sealing a £60million move to Manchester after United finally reached an agreement with Chelsea on Thursday.

For a player who now has less than 12 months remaining on his contract, it is a big fee that United have agreed to pay, but Erik ten Hag has long since identified the Chelsea midfielder as his top target to strengthen his midfield options this summer. With that in mind, United deserve credit for backing the Dutchman and bringing in a player that he believes will be key to his system.

United, of course, had to revamp their midfield last summer after a torrid 2021/22 campaign, drafting in Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. Working alongside Bruno Fernandes in the engine room, the duo enjoyed stellar debut campaigns at Old Trafford, playing key roles in United's resurrection.

However, it was blindingly obvious to everyone towards the end of the campaign that Eriksen, who was snapped up on a free transfer, was struggling with fatigue. He was almost anonymous in the FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley and unfortunately for Ten Hag he had no sufficient quality available to him in reserve.

With the addition of Mount, however, that will change. Though the Portsmouth-born midfielder has never been a player to instantly command attention or be considered as a global superstar, he is an efficient operator that is always tidy on the ball, only too happy to help with the press and chip in
