Mason Mount defended after dreadful miss in first Manchester United game at Old Trafford vs RC Lens

Danny Murphy is gobsmacked by the amount of people who have already written Mason Mount off after the Manchester United midfielder's unfortunate miss vs RC Lens on Saturday.

Mount struggled to stand out as United beat the French side 3-1 at Old Trafford. He was left red-faced when he scuffed an effort from six-yards with no goalkeeper in sight, following a great ball by Bruno Fernandes and some unselfish play from Alejandro Garnacho.

It continued an underwhelming pre-season campaign for the 24-year-old who is yet to fulfil his potential, following a £55million move from Chelsea last month. But Murphy insists that writing the midfielder off so soon is a mistake, adding that fans will see his strengths once the new season begins.

"It’s amazing how many people have already written him off," Murphy told the Daily Mail. "I speak to lots of people in football and they all have the same opinion: Mason Mount is a super player who has had one bad season – and that came in Chelsea’s most traumatic campaign in years.

"United fans will not realise what a player they have until they see him in action. He was player of the year for two seasons in a row at Chelsea in a team full of superstars. Every manager at the club played him.

"Those Chelsea fans who were happy to see him go and the United fans who were non-plussed by his arrival will be changing their opinion very quickly."
