Maserati returns to racing after 60 years with high-output Gen3 Formula E sports car

Almost 100 years after debuting its first racing car, the Tipo 26, at the Targa Florio, Maserati is ready to enter the world of motorsport once again. But unlike the petrol-powered car that took to the track in 1926, 2023 will be very different.

The team from Modena, Italy, has been in a slump in recent years. Be it its ageing and (very) out-of-date product line-up or struggling sales figures, the maker of desirable Italian cars failed to make an impact on the automotive world.

But a raft of changes across the entire Maserati board saw the carmaker lift itself from its slump, and the last few years have been a time of rejuvenation and revitalisation. And following the 2020 promise that it will again enter motorsport, the time has arrived for Maserati to do so.

Enter Formula E and its ninth season in 2023.

Partnership with Venturi

Maserati is no stranger to motorsport and active participation, but the company has its eyes on the future while its feet are planted in the present. With Formula E presenting the basis for the technologies that can be used in roadgoing electric vehicles (EVs), it makes sense for the Italian giant to enter the sport as it designs and prepares its next generation of road cars: EVs.

Ahead of last season's Rome E-Prix, Maserati and ROKiT Venturi Racing announced a multi-year partnership, with MSG (Monaco Sports Group) coming on board as the title partner. As such, the team will be known as Maserati MSG Racing.

Venturi, Formula E's longest-serving team, has been involved since the series' inception in 2014. It will remain an integral part of the rebranded team as it develops new innovations for the team.
