Martin Lewis' latest verdict on whether you should fix your energy or not

Martin has delivered his latest verdict on whether billpayers should fix their energy bills or not.

Speaking on this week's edition of The Martin Lewis Podcast, he discussed what current fixed deals are on the market. He then compared the cheapest deals against predictions from Cornwall Insight.

It comes following strong predictions that energy prices are expected to fall in the coming month. Martin advised that it might not be a good idea to lock in on a fixed deal right now.

He said: "In a nutshell, prices are going to fall further than was previously thought. So as for whether you should fix or not here's the short answer - no.

"Now let me give you the long answer, the predictions from Cornwall Insight are that in April prices will drop 16 per cent and then the next three monthly period in July, they will drop another 8 per cent and then the next three monthly period in October they will rise by 3 per cent. Now the April prediction of the 16 per cent drop is pretty locked-in because we are three quarters of the way through the assessment period."

Martin then highlighted that if the later predictions for October, which are subject to change at this stage, are correct, it would mean the average person would be paying 20-and-a-half per cent less than right now.

He added: "So how does that contrast to the cheapest fixes? Well the cheapest fix on the market that doesn't require you signing up for other products is from Octopus Energy only for its existing customer.

"That is 9 per cent cheaper than current prices, but I'm saying the price cap on average if the predictions are right will be 12 and a half per cent cheaper. The cheapest open to all is with
