Martin Brundle slams Fernando Alonso for calling Lewis Hamilton an ‘idiot’ after Belgian Grand Prix crash

Martin Brundle has slammed Fernando Alonso for his comments about Sir Lewis Hamilton after the pair collided during last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix.

On the opening lap of the race, the two were battling over second-place when Hamilton attempted an audacious move around the outside of Alonso but squeezed the Alpine driver too much, with the two cars touching and Hamilton’s Mercedes getting launched spectacular into the air.

Alonso was able to carry on and would come home in fifth, but Hamilton’s car was too badly damaged and was forced to retire before the opening lap was done, the first time the seven-time world champion has failed to finish a race this season.

Upon reviewing the footage post-race, Hamilton would take full responsibility for the incident but in the immediate aftermath Alonso was furious, berating his former McLaren teammate over the radio.

The two-time world champion said: ‘What an idiot closing the door from the outside. I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first.’

But former F1 driver and legendary pundit Brundle was less-than impressed with the Spaniard’s words and rushed to Hamilton’s defence.

‘Fernando’s radio comments, albeit fuelled by anger and adrenaline, about Lewis only being able to win from the front were in my opinion wholly inaccurate and unfair,’ he wrote in his column for Sky Sports.
