Martin Brundle reacts as 'uncomfortable' Abu Dhabi footage resurfaces

The 2022 Formula 1 season is drawing closer and many are excited to get going once again but the spectre of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of 2021 appears to be showing no sign of moving on just yet.

The end of the 2021 campaign was controversial to say the least with Max Verstappen taking the championship on the final lap after a contested bringing in of the Safety Car call by Race Director Michael Masi.

In the aftermath, the FIA has confirmed an investigation into the sequence of events and will reveal its findings before the Bahrain Grand Prix in March, with footage of a conversation between Red Bull Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley and Masi towards the end of the race resurfacing this week.

In the clip, Wheatley asks for Masi to just let the lapped cars between Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen move out of the way, with him obviously wanting the best chance for Max to win the title, before going racing and that, of course, was what happened.

It’s naturally caused a stir on social media and Martin Brundle has had his say on it:

“It’s not new news, and also I think you have to understand that it’s not necessarily telling Michael Masi something he didn’t already know,” he told Sky F1.

“Let’s not assume it’s giving Masi information he didn’t already know in terms of what he could and couldn’t do in terms of the lapped pack.

“Of course it’s really uncomfortable, and a lot of people are unhappy: Hamilton fans, Mercedes fans.

“And you don’t even have to be a Lewis Hamilton fan to think that forever he should be an eight-time World Champion, because, for me, the really crucial regulation that wasn’t carried out was that the safety car should have come in at the end of the following lap.
