Mark Warburton started Rangers journey to the Champions League and I knew he built something special - Kenny Miller

When Mark Warburton arrived as Rangers boss in the summer of 2015 he had a plan. The players, myself included, were given three set goals. The first step was to smash the Championship.

The second was to win the Premiership. And the third was to get back into the Champions League. And that’s what made Wednesday night in Eindhoven - and that dream draw against Liverpool, Ajax and Napoli - all the more special. Warbs had a vision. And it was made clear inside Ibrox when he got there.

Now, it was never going to happen in two or three seasons. Mark knew that. And when we beat Celtic in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, we probably all got a bit carried away. But in hindsight, we weren’t ready for the next level. The quality just wasn’t there. And neither was the real top standards that Steven Gerrard eventually brought to the club and Gio van Bronckhorst has carried on.

Warbs didn’t have the kind of financial backing that’s there now. We were signing free transfer from League One in England. He did a brilliant job at Rangers.

But in that early meeting, where he outlined the long-term plan, it gave the players and the club something to aim for. For the first time in years, it gave us a feel of what Rangers used to be.

I had already been at the club twice before and experienced success. And when Warbs came in, it was the start of building towards something special.

It has taken seven years to achieve it. But given where the club has been, it’s been relatively quick.

When Pedro Caixinha came in, it became an even bigger mountain to climb. Remember, I scored in the Progres Niederkorn tie when the team from Luxembourg knocked us out of Europe and Pedro ended up in the bush.
