Mark Viduka breaks football exile to rave about Celtic 'institution' but polarising striker sends a Zagreb warning
Mark Viduka has hailed Celtic fans as the greatest in the world.
But he still reckons hometown heroes Dinamo will have the edge in their Champions League showdown in Zagreb on Tuesday night.. The big Aussie made the move from from Dinamo Zagreb to Parkhead for £3.5 million move in 1998 and after a bumpy start, when he returned home Down Under after citing stress, he shrugged that off to net 27 times in his only full season in the Hoops before a big money move to the English Premier League with Leeds Utd.
However, that came months after a petulant reaction to Celtic's infamous shock Scottish Cup loss to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, with Viduka reportedly throwing his boots in the ban at the break and refused to re-emerge for the second half. Now he's back in the Croatian capital running a coffee shop in between filling in on guitar in his son's band. and will be at the Makisimir Stadium as a guest of the home club.
But although he has nothing but good memories of Celtic, he still thinks they might come unstuck tonight despite Dinamo Zagreb's dreadful recent form and long injury list. Viduka said: "I had a great time. Celtic is not a club, it's an institution. The fans are probably the best in the world.
"I played, I would say, maybe my best football of my career. I was the top scorer in the league, I was also named the best player in the Scottish league. I have wonderful memories of Celtic. When you run onto the pitch in that stadium in front of 60,000 people, it's a fantastic experience. It's also a big responsibility, but also a pleasure. When you score a goal for such a club, it's an honour.
