Mark Robins makes Viktor Gyokeres prediction as Coventry City star continues to shine

The forward bagged yet another goal at the weekend as the Sky Blues were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton.

Despite the defeat after extra time, Robins was in a positive mood. He responded to a question about Gyokeres’ Premier League credentials by claiming he still has work to do but that he sees him playing in the top flight some day.

“Hopefully he can. He’s been called up into the Sweden squad and he sort of played some minutes in the Sweden set-up, the full international set-up, so that’s something else that’s coming for him,” said Robins, via the Coventry Telegraph.

“So things are moving in the right direction for him. He is still learning the game but a lot of the work that he does with his power and his pace, and obviously he’s got an eye for a goal.

“There are still areas that he can work on clearly but yeah, I think he has got a lot of really good attributes to allow him to play at the top level at some point.”

The Swede struggled during his first stint in the Championship with Swansea City, where he scored zero goals from 11 league appearances.

He similarly struggled last season with Coventry, failing to make a big impact in the side.

However, this season he has scored 10 league goals from 23 starts, which has helped Robins’ side compete for the play-off places.

Coventry find themselves 12th in the Championship this season. The gap to the top six is now five points following a poor run of form in January.

Up next for Robins’ side is the visit of Blackpool tomorrow evening.

This praise from his manager will only push Gyokeres to continue developing and improving.

Scoring against Premier League opposition will be a massive confidence boost, as Coventry almost pulled off an upset.
