Mark Fitzgerald departs Clare to take up role with Kerry Under-20s

Clare are on the lookout for a new senior football manager following the resignation of Mark Fitzgerald.

A statement released by Clare GAA on Friday morning confirmed his departure.

Last year, he was appointed as Colm Collins' successor on a two-year term but he has decided not to stay on for his second year.

There has been much talk in recent weeks that Fitzgerald would be asked to take a new role with his native Kerry, and he is now moving to a coaching role with the under-20s.

Fitzgerald had a fine impact on Clare football in his short time in charge. They only narrowly missed out on promotion back to Division 2 in the Allianz National Football League and they reached the Munster SFC final, losing to Kerry by 0-23 to 1-13 at Cusack Park.

"I'd like to thank Clare County Board for their unwavering support over the year," Fitzgerald said.

"I'd also like to thank the management and backroom team of Clare senior football for their tireless work throughout the season.

"Finally, I'd like to thank the players who have shown huge commitment and dedication since taking up the role.

"I will be taking up a position with the Kerry Under-20 footballers and the opportunity to work with my own county was something I couldn't turn down.

"I enjoyed my time with Clare immensely and I wish them the very best of luck going forward."
