Mark Douglas reacts as Newcastle release image

Over the last round of Premier League fixtures, the Magpies extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Early goals from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schar gave the home side a lead, and they managed to cling onto all three points despite Lewis Dunk pulling one back for the Seagulls in the second half.

After the game, the club’s Twitter page shared an image of the whole Newcastle team together in the dressing room celebrating their victory.

In light of the image, Douglas wrote an article for the i explaining that manager Eddie Howe used to do the same thing with his Bournemouth players and his new side should pay no attention to the ‘celebration police’. 

He argued that although negative comments may come their way, “that would be missing the point of what Howe is trying to build at Newcastle, a club that was fractured by dissent and disunity until a transformative takeover last year that has returned hope to Tyneside along with controversy at the identity of their owners.”

Considering the club have now managed to win five of their last six Premier League games, it’s easy to see why team spirit is so high. After all, such form has now lifted them way above the relegation zone up into 14th place. 

Interestingly enough, a report in The Athletic claims that there were some close to the club who ‘scoffed’ at the idea of taking a group picture after each win.

Now, however, as Douglas points out in his article, the ‘celebration police’ have been proven wrong and the team spirit is almost certainly in a much better place than it was before Howe came in with his methods.
