Marina Mabrey selected as Toronto Tempo's first WNBA all-star

Toronto Tempo guard Marina Mabrey will be heading as a reserve player to this year's WNBA All-Star Game.

It marks the first time a player will represent the newly formed franchise, as well as a first for the 6-foot-1 athlete.

“It feels really good to be named a WNBA All-Star,” said Mabrey in a Toronto Tempo news release.

“After years of hard work and perseverance, it's incredibly validating to be recognized among the best players in the league."

Mabrey made headlines last month after tying the WNBA record with a 53-point game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

She now joins the record set by Liz Cambage for Dallas against New York on July 17, 2018, and matched by A'ja Wilson for Las Vegas at Atlanta on Aug. 22, 2023.

That game set up Mabrey to take over the league record for most points scored over a three-game stretch with 113 points made from June 19 to 25.

According to the Toronto Tempo, Mabrey is averaging at over 20 points per game for the first time in her basketball career and is amongst the league's top five scorers.

"We’re thrilled to see her recognized as a WNBA All-Star," said head coach Sandy Brondello. "She’s embraced every challenge, elevated her game and made everyone around her better."

The 22nd annual WNBA All-Star Game will be held in Chicago on July 25.
