Margate manager Reece Prestedge asks for more set-piece goals – before Tyrone Sterling delivers in 2-0 Isthmian Premier win against Lewes

Tyrone Sterling’s first-half header was just what the doctor ordered in Margate’s Isthmian Premier home win against Lewes.

Gate earned a 2-0 triumph at Hartsdown Park in front of a crowd of 372.

Experienced Grenada international centre-half Sterling powered home on the 25-minute mark from Ben Greenhalgh’s corner before the Margate player-assistant doubled their advantage on the hour last weekend.

Gate boss Reece Prestedge had said he wanted more set-piece goals from his side ahead of kick-off - and Sterling delivered.

Prestedge revealed: “It’s quite funny.

“I had said we need more goals from corners and setplays. Then, Tyrone pops up with an unbelievable header.

“If you watch it, the power he gets behind it is great. It’s good when stuff like that pays off.”

While Prestedge was pleased to see Sterling score, he won’t be putting any undue pressure on his backline to regularly contribute at the other end.

He explained: “As long as the defence is doing their main job - keeping goals out - I think we have got to be happy.”

It was only a second competitive goal of the campaign for Sterling before Greenhalgh added his fourth goal this season after the restart as they returned to action after an 11-day break.

Prestedge said: “Everyone did well, to be honest. There wasn’t one that you could say didn’t have a good game.

“Ben was very influential. He set up the first goal and scored the second. So, overall, he had a good game.

“The most pleasing thing is that everyone sort of took on board how we wanted to go and the way we wanted to set up.

“We had a good few sessions on it because we didn’t play last Saturday. It looked like we had nailed it.”
