Marco van Basten ridicules United and sends warning signal to Ten Hag
Dutch legend Marco van Basten has questioned whether Erik ten Hag should take over as the new Manchester United manager after watching their dismal performance against Liverpool.
The Red Devils suffered another major blow in their bid to finish the 2021-2022 Premier League season inside the top four with a heavy 4-0 defeat to leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday.
Van Basten said the 'difference between Liverpool and Manchester United was huge' and that the Red Devils 'walked around like beaten people'. He also labelled Harry Maguire as poor distributor of the ball.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Van Basten said: ‘The difference between Liverpool and Manchester United at the moment is huge, they walked around like beaten people.
‘They are one of the biggest clubs in England but not one of them showed anything. Maguire passes the ball in the same way and thinks, ‘I don’t know, are you doing it?’
‘They are not thinking about solutions, it’s unbelievable.’
Jurgen Klopp's title-chasing Liverpool started in electrifying fashion at Anfield on Tuesday evening. January signing Luis Diaz opened the scoring for the Reds after just five minutes of action.
Mo Salah rediscovered his form by adding Liverpool's next two goals before Sadio Mane provided the final nail in the Manchester United coffin by scoring in the 68th minute of the game.
The result has raised questions over the attitude of the Manchester United players - with many calling the current squad the 'worst team' the club has fielded in years.
The defeats also means United are now sitting sixth in the league table with just five matches left this campaign.
Additionally, both fourth and fifth place Tottenham and Arsenal having games in hand over the Red Devils.
