Manchester venue named one of the most beautiful buildings in the WORLD

A Manchester institution has been named one of the most beautiful buildings in the world at a prestigious awards ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The Corn Exchange, located in the city centre’s Exchange Square, received the Conservation Silver in Public Buildings at the International Green Apple Environment Awards for Beautiful Buildings 2023.

The awards recognise buildings and structures around the world which make a positive contribution to their area as well as focus on the environment. Taking home the gold in the category was the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in India and the bronze went to the Fire Station art space in Qatar.

Named for its originally intended use, the current Corn Exchange building was first named the Corn & Produce Exchange when it was built in 1903. Following the IRA bomb in 1996, the building was renovated into a modern shopping centre under the name of The Triangle until 2014.

The grade II-listed building was later redeveloped into a number of food outlets and given a name in homage to its historical past. It currently houses restaurants like Banyay, The Cosy Club, Delhi House, Mowgli and Pho, as well as a Roomzzz Aparthotel and an Escape Hunt experience.

“Winning this prestigious award is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our team in preserving and showcasing the architectural splendor of the Corn Exchange,” the Corn Exchange’s General Manager, Daniel Davis, said.

“We are thrilled to be recognised for this and feel proud that our building contributes to Manchester’s unique charm and character.”
