Manchester United will hope for immediate £47million return when Premier League season kicks off

Out with the old, in with the new.

Manchester United will have a fresh number one for the first time in more than a decade when they kick off the new Premier League season on Monday night. Andre Onana will be between the posts when Wolves visit Old Trafford having arrived in the summer for £47million from Inter Milan.

The Cameroon international is the profile of player Erik ten Hag wanted and while perhaps not the complete antidote to the departed David de Gea, certainly from the other end of the spectrum.

Onana is a ball playing goalkeeper who spends as much time outside the box as in it, with the footballing skills of an outfielder and the passing range of a midfielder. The 27-year-old will provide United with a whole new dimension.

There may well be teething problems, Onana’s approach will naturally lead to moments of exposure and perhaps a soft goal or two. But he’s a more than capable shot-stopper who was instrumental in helping Inter reach the Champions League final last season and is much more than the sweeper keeper moniker he is often labelled with.

Nonetheless it’s that facet of his game that has prompted Ten Hag, who worked with Onana at Ajax, to bring him to Manchester. The Dutchman wants to play out from the back and have a keeper who provides more options.

"I think the most important factor for how Erik ten Hag wants to play is that this goalkeeper is very much attached to the outfield players as a footballing player," was former United defender Rio Ferdinand's assessment.
