Manchester United weakness has at least pointed them to their £47million solution to problem position

When a goalkeeper moves to a new club he will always be keen to make an impression and to have some work to do, but even Andre Onana must be getting a bit sick of this.

In his last 11 games for his club, he has faced 237 shots, at an average of 21.5 a game. It is a monstrous workload for a goalkeeper and one more akin to a team battling relegation than one trying to get back into the Champions League.

Manchester United's hopes are fading on that front but that they are still alive at all is due in large part to Onana, who has grown into his role as the club's new No.1 this season and is now one of the best players in Erik ten Hag's team. Like Lisandro Martinez, this is a deal to sign one of his former players that looks well-judged.

That wasn't the widely held view at the start of the season, when Onana looked hesitant and nervous in the United goal, making a string of mistakes in a disastrous Champions League group campaign. But he has recovered his poise admirably and as a shot-stopper, he has proven his worth since his £47million move from Inter Milan.

In those previous 11 games, Onana has faced 66 shots on target but only 16 have beaten him. United's Premier League discrepancy between the number of goals they have conceded (40) and their xG of 53 is the highest such gap in the league. Only Thomas Kaminski and Alphonse Areola have made more saves than Onana's 108 in the league this season.
