Manchester United took the wrong road but reached the right destination with Mason Greenwood

The world has been watching Manchester United and the club finally announced a decision on Mason Greenwood on Monday.

The announcement confirmed that Greenwood will recommence his career away from Old Trafford after the club's internal six-and-a-half month investigation decided 'it would be most appropriate for him' to continue elsewhere.

Richard Arnold and Greenwood also released statements but the decision only represents the beginning of the end of the story.

Greenwood's career at the club he joined aged seven is over. That decision has been welcomed, but outspoken voices who protested against his potential return strongly believe the Old Trafford hierarchy failed supporters in how it came to it..

The right decision has been made but in the wrong way. It's understood that Greenwood's return was set to be announced by club CEO Arnold to staff, but news of his potential return leaked last week and there was a backlash from fans which forced a U-turn.

That has left a sour taste in supporters' mouths and left them feeling the key decision-makers cannot be trusted, which has always been a concern with the Glazers as custodians.

The Glazers delegated the decision to Arnold and there are now obvious questions for him to answer. Why wasn't a decision reached sooner? Why was a return for the player initially planned? Why weren't the views of fans considered?

It speaks volumes that unrest among some of the club's own employees was a large factor in the U-turn. Some were understood to be open to Greenwood's return, but others were strongly against the possibility.
