Manchester United told the biggest reasons they're lagging behind Man City and Liverpool

Mark Lawrenson has suggested Manchester United's players aren't fit enough to perform at the same level as their Premier League rivals and that they're underperforming because they know Ralf Rangnick will be "gone by May".

Having been appointed following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rangnick has maintained top-four hopes at Old Trafford but has also seen his United side dumped out of the FA Cup.

The cup defeat to Middlesbrough was followed by frustrating draws against Burnley and Southampton, though a 2-0 win against Brighton on Tuesday night lifted United back into the Champions League spots.

Rangnick is set to move upstairs into an advisory role at the end of this season, at which point United will look to appoint a permanent successor to Solskjaer.

Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax's Erik ten Hag are viewed as the two leading contenders to take over.

For now, Rangnick's brief is simply to achieve a top-four finish, but Lawrenson has highlighted some major concerns moving forward.

"They don't look fit if you compare them with Liverpool and Man City," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"They are quite good in the first half and then they tail off. I'm not too sure they're that well-organised and I don't think they have a strong dressing room.

"I think one or two will look at Rangnick and think 'you'll be gone in May'.
