Manchester United told the biggest problem in their handling of Jadon Sancho saga

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke was surprised to see the Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag incident play out in the public domain.

After the defeat to Arsenal prior to the international break, Ten Hag was asked why Sancho was missing from the squad which travelled to North London. His reasoning was that the winger had not performed well enough in training.

In response, Sancho described the comments as 'untrue' and said he was being made a 'scapegoat'. On Tuesday, the 23-year-old deleted his post from social media.

However, the damage had already been done and there is uncertainty surrounding Sancho's future at United. When asked by MEN Sport about the situation, Yorke explained he would have preferred to have seen the differences between manager and player sorted behind the scenes.

He said: "Both the player Jadon Sancho and manager Erik ten Hag won’t want to come to a situation where their feud is in the public domain. I’ve seen plenty of players fall out with their managers over the years, but to see it play out in public like this is surprising.

"United normally handle these situations well. Ten Hag has his work cut out for him with both off-the-pitch issues and the club’s disappointing results this season, but it’s his job to make tough decisions.

"Seeing players fall out with him won’t bring a good sense of morale to the team, and if he has to leave players out or even get rid of them, so be it. United are obviously having some internal issues right now, but I wouldn’t classify the situation as nightmarish. It is, however, a concern."

Yorke was speaking to the Manchester Evening News in his role as ambassador for Genting Casino.
